A rotating damper sits partway up the rod and does the work here: it turns against a little resistance, which is why a single sheet comes away instead of the whole roll unspooling across the worktop.

The base is weighted with sand and cement, not hollow plastic. EVA pads and four suction cups underneath add to that, so it stays down on a smooth, level surface while paper is pulled one-handed.

Suction wants a smooth surface — on rough stone or unsealed timber the cups will not grip.

Construction combines stainless steel with PP plastic, finished silver, resisting rust, scratches and smudges.

At 13.4 by 6.6 inches it occupies little of a small kitchen or a cloakroom, and most rolls sold today will slide onto the spindle.
