A 5 inch opening is the useful measurement here: wide enough that a hand goes in flat and comes out with a biscuit rather than fishing through a narrow neck. Two jars are supplied, each holding half a gallon, or 1.89 litres, and each standing 8 inches tall on a 5.5 inch base.

The lids carry a rubber gasket, so the seal is airtight and odours stay inside, which suits sweets, dried goods, coffee beans or dog treats equally. Thick glass keeps the contents visible and gives the pair enough presence to leave out on a worktop; together they weigh 1.9 kg.

The glass bodies go in a dishwasher, and the manufacturer lists them as microwave safe, but the lids should be wiped or washed by hand to protect the seal.
