Sansnow Bamboo Drawer Box, 12 by 4 Inches, Mortise and Tenon Joints, Lacquered

Joinery is the distinguishing feature. Corners are mortise-and-tenon rather than nailed, a furniture technique carried across to a drawer box.

The outer shell is 12 by 4 by 2 inches, so a drawer needs to exceed those figures - an equal measurement will not slide in. Usable space inside comes to 11.7 by 3.6 by 1.7 inches, and Sansnow allows a tolerance of a tenth or two of an inch.

Bamboo grown in southern China is carbonised over four stages, credited by the maker for the box's stability and its resistance to damp.

Three coats of paint go on, each dried and polished before the next, leaving a face smooth enough that nothing catches.

One box, one compartment, 0.45 lb. Volume works out at roughly 1,530 cubic centimetres.

Loose rather than fixed, it lifts out for use on a shelf, a dresser top or a bathroom counter.
