Only 3.1 inches across the narrow face. That is the dimension that lets four of them stand in a cabinet too shallow for round canisters, each measuring 4.7 inches the other way and 6.1 tall.

A silicone ring under the wooden lid shuts out moisture, which is what stops salt clumping and biscuits going soft.

Capacity runs to 1.2 quarts, 1.1 litres, per jar — about right for spices bought in bulk, nuts, or a fortnight of coffee.

The glass may go into the freezer and the microwave, but only once the lid is off.
